Pounding of the Taro root into Poi has long been a tradition thru-out Polynesia. The poi pounders snapped out of rocks into a perfect to shape with a handle and curve to keep from slipping. the head is rounder out to smashing as well as rolling motions. The word Pounding has taken on more then just this meaning though. A saying made popular from 1980's Surf movie "North Shore". Again the definition is defined by the context on the conversation.
